You may want a garage door, but how big are they? In this guide on garage door sizes, you will learn the different garage door dimensions and how to determine what you need.

Garage doors aren’t just necessary features for your home, they can also increase the value of your property. Because of this, choosing a new door for your garage should be a well-thought-out decision and it all starts with the size. Our garage door company put together this guide to help you understand standard garage door sizes and how to pick the right size door for your home.

So let’s get started!

Standard Garage Door Sizes

Garage doors come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Because of this, the exact size of your garage door will depend on your home, however, there are a few standard garage door sizes that are the norm for most houses.

Here’s a closer look:

One-Car Garage

If you have a single-car garage, you will need a door that’s about 8-9 feet wide by 7-8 feet high. A garage door this size should fit most homes with a one-car garage. That being said, if your garage is bigger than the average single-car garage but still smaller than a two-car garage, you may need to measure your space and get a custom door (more on that later).

Two-Car Garage

When it comes to two-car garages, you have two different door options. You can either have one large door or two smaller doors (often separated by a column). Neither of these options are better than the other, it just comes down to your personal design preferences and/or current home structure.

If you choose a two-door garage, the doors will be the same size as normal single-car garage doors, you’ll just have two of them instead of one. If you choose one large double-door, it will be about 16-18 feet wide by 7-8 feet high.

RV Garage

Want to park your RV in your garage? You will need an RV-sized door.

If you need a door with enough space for your RV, you’ll need something that’s at least 16 feet tall and 8-9 feet wide which is larger than your average double garage door. Make sure you know the size of your RV before shopping for a new garage door so you can get the right size.

Commercial Garage

Commercial garage doors have to be big enough to allow access to all different kinds of trucks and equipment. Because of this, they’re much bigger than anything you would find on a residential home.

The average commercial garage door is about 24 feet high by 32 feet wide.

If you’re looking for a commercial garage door, make sure you talk to a company that offers this product. Otherwise, you might end up with a door that’s much too small for your building and make garage door maintenance difficult.

Custom Garage Doors

Sometimes the standard garage door sizes, no matter what type of garage you have, aren’t big enough for your vehicles. When this happens, talk to a professional and design a custom garage door instead. You can make this type of garage door in any size and any style you want or need.

Standard Thickness of a Garage Door

You probably don’t spend a lot of time thinking about the thickness of your garage door, but before you buy a new one, you’ll want to consider this important factor as well. After all, the thickness of the door is what determines the quality of the insulation.

If your garage door is thin and poorly insulated, it can become a huge escape route for a lot of your home’s energy. That means you’ll have to spend more money on your energy bill every month, so it’s important to think about the thickness of a garage door.

Most insulated garage doors have between 1/4 to 1/2 inch of foam insulation on the inside while other doors may have insulation up to an inch thick. The thicker the insulation, the more energy savings.

Keep in mind, thicker garage doors tend to be more expensive, however, the amount of money you’ll save on energy costs and garage door repair tends to make the extra expenses worth it.

How to Measure Your Garage Door

Before you buy and install a new garage door, even if you already know the size you need, it’s a good idea to measure the space and double-check the dimensions.

Don’t make the mistake of only measuring the door space. You should measure the entire garage to ensure you have space for the garage door opener and to ensure there will still be enough space for your car when the garage door is closed.

Start by measuring the height and width of the door opening. After that, measure the side room (the space on each side of the door) and the headroom (the space from the top of the door to the ceiling). Then measure the depth of your garage.

Once you have these measurements, you can start shopping for the right garage door replacement.

Installing a New Garage Door

You’ve sorted through the various garage door sizes and have picked the best one for your garage, but you should not try installing it on your own. Garage door installation in Katy, TX, and other areas we serve isn’t easy and if you don’t have the right experience and know-how it can actually be very dangerous. You should always call a professional and have them take care of this part of the job for you.
